My internship at the blood bank
For two weeks, I worked at the blood bank in Frankfurt. It was very interesting to see the whole process of donating blood. I got to see and learn a lot of new and fascinating stuff, about donating and blood in general. I liked it, although I had a few issues. They were very busy, so that I didnt get a chance to do all the things that were planned for me. I still got to see and learn a lot, because i was in many different departnments, and now i will introduce them to you, since it is actually a very awesome job.
First of all, I was at the blood delivery service departnment. There, they pack up and scan blood and plasma deliveries.
Next, I was at the crossmatching laboratory. I got to see the blood group determination.
Then, I was at the DSSD, the german stem cell donor registry. At the DSSD they look for stem cell donors and put them in the registry.
After that, I was at the PCR lab. There, they test the blood to see if there are any diseases, like HIV or corona.
Next, I was at the breast milk bank. The name kind of already explains it, they take care of breast milk donors and the milk itself.
Continuing to the next departnment, I was at the cell seperation area. That ist were the donating takes place.
Then, there is production. They take the donated blood directly after and they process it.
And last but not least, i was at the HLA-lab, they examine white blood cells.
So as you can see, there are a lot of departnments to work at, and i didnt even see all of them.
I grew a lot throughout my internship, since I had to meet and talk to new people everyday, and that developed my social skills.
I would recommend this internship to other people, especially if you like science.
Even though I didnt have the best experience, I know other people who had an amazing time, so I really do recommend it.
